The anniversary of your baby’s birth and death will always be accompanied by a mixture of thoughts and emotions.

One thought may be about what to do on this day. There is no right or wrong answer. We all grieve differently, so it is important to do what is right for you. Even doing nothing is still doing something.

Ideas to mark their first birthday:

Here are a few ideas if you choose to mark the occasion:

  • Plant or buy some flowers, perhaps your baby’s birth flower.
  • Light a candle.
  • Buy a keepsake item or a first birthday present.
  • Make or buy a birthday cake.
  • Post on social media.
  • Write or find a poem that is meaningful to you.
  • Reach out to a support group.
  • Share your story, publicly or privately with friends and family.  
  • Write a letter to your baby.
  • Visit significant places such as a memorial or church. A place that has meaning to you.
  • Perhaps go for a nice walk and take in some scenery and fresh air.  
  • Spend time with family and friends.
  • Spend time by yourself. 
  • Find time to listen to music or read a book.
  • Take time off work.
  • Enjoy a day out.
  • Look through your memory box if you have one.
  • Participate in cultural or religious traditions and ceremonies in memory of your lost baby. 
  • Make a donation or participate in a fundraiser for a cause that is close to your heart.
